A clinical study on the relationship between the ABO blood groups and hypertension

Abstract
The cause of primary hypertension is not discernible in most instances and the development of hypertension has been known to have strong genetic and environmental components. To determine the relationship between the ABO blood groups and hypertension, we compared the ABO blood groups of 432 hypertension patients with those of 1000 normal subjects. In our results, 33.8% of hypertension patients indicated the type B blood while 27.3% in normal subjects, of which difference was significant (p<0.05). The frequency of type AB blood was 6.7% in hypertension patients which was significantly lower than 11.6% in normal subjects (p< 0.01). However there were no significan t differences of the frequencies of type A and 0 between hypertension and normal groups. These results indicate that the type B blood predominate in hypertension patients and the authors suggest that another studies related this subject should be needed.
